Highland Park has been releasing a series of single cask expressions around the world. Named after the nickname for New York City that became popular in the nineteenth century by short story writer Washington Irving, Gotham City is a 15 year single cask refill butt for the New York City market. Limited to just 588 bottles, from Cask no. 3297 which was hand selected by Highland Park Whisky Maker Gordon Motion for its exceptional quality. Gotham City was distilled in 2002, matured in a refill sherry butt, and bottled in 2017 at a cask strength of 59.6% ABV.

TASTING NOTES
Glass for Review: Spiegelau Nosing Glass
Nose: The nose starts off light, slowly unveiling layers of toffee, nougat, honeycomb and marzipan. Very subtle hints of plum, ganache, and dark chocolate raspberries. A slight tinge of alcohol tickles the nostrils.
Palate: Similar to the nose, this is a very well layered palate with an oily mouthfeel. A good kick of Sherry quickly turns into fudge, marzipan, caramel, and toffee. As it sits on your palate, bold espresso notes come into picture followed by cinnamon, nutmeg, spice cake. Slowly progressing into spicy sandalwood and oaky notes.
Finish: Sherry immediately bursts on the finish adding to the spice that built toward the end of the palate. More espresso flavors come out, with cinnamon and clove. Long lasting finish that is only slightly tannic. The finish transitions from spice to honey and nougat as it lingers.
Overall: Of the Highland Park expressions I have tried, this is probably my favorite so far. The dram is well layered and balanced from the nose to finish. Each dram has a slightly different feel to it, noticing different notes each sip.
