Review Criteria

I base all my reviews and ratings off the same criteria. Price is not a factor that affects the rating (although it may be noted in the body of the review).

COLOR

All reviews use the same scale by Whisky Magazine for qualifying the color.

SCORING METHOD

Each whisky is scored off of four areas: nose, palate, finish, and the overall impression of the whisky.

  • Nose – Base score out of 25 points. Final nosing score is out of 100 (Base Score x 4 = Final Score)
  • Palate – Base score out of 25 points. Final palate score is out of 100 (Base Score x 4 = Final Score)
  • Finish – Base score out of 25 points. Final finish score is out of 100 (Base Score x 4 = Final Score)
  • Overall – Base score out of 25 points. Final overall score is out of 100 (Base Score x 4 = Final Score)
  • Total – Total score is calculated by adding all the base scores together.

SCORING SCALE

9.8-10.0 – Holy grail!
9.0+ Excellent – A favorite. Must buy!
8.0+ Good – A bottle I’d like to have on my shelf (so long as the price is within reason); a good daily drinker
7.0+ Okay – Wouldn’t pass it up, if offered free (or at a great price)
6.0+ Pass – No thanks, I’ll have an Old Fashioned please
≤5.9 Bad – I wouldn’t drink this by choice
